New Children’s Books for Women’s History Month

We love celebrating girl power and  women who do amazing things. So we are excited to share this list of new children's books for Women's History Month! Women in Science Who Changed the World Written by Heidi Poleman and illustrated by Angie Alape This board book introduces little ones to incredible women who have made a difference in the world of science. Each two page spread focuses on a different female scientist, sharing a little bit about her background and her accomplishments. The illustrations show the women hard at work, doing what they loved. Song After Song: The Musical Life of Julie Andrews Written by Julie Hedlund and illustrated by Ilaria Urbinati This picture book biography shares the early life of Julie Andrews, and how she used music to find her voice and deal with struggles in her life. Kids will enjoy learning about the childhood of the woman who would become Mary Poppins and Maria, and learning how she fell in love with music. The back of the book includes an author's note and a timeline of Andrews' life. The Queen of Chess: How Judit Polgar Changed the Game Written by Laurie Wallmark and illustrated by Stevie Lewis In this biography, kids are introduced to Judit Polgar, one of the youngest chess grandmasters in history. The text follows Judit as she grows from a young girl playing chess at home, to one of the most important chess figures. The text is accompanied by dark hued illustrations that highlight the intensity of the game and the people playing it. The back of the book includes more information about her, as well as a timeline of her life, and an explanation of the mathematics of chess. Inside the Colorful Mind of Master Inventor Beulah Louise Henry Written by Katie Mazeika This inspirational story introduces young's readers to Beulah Louise Henry, a woman who used her incredible mind to create inventions. The text shows how Beulah saw problems around her and used her creativity to come up with inventions to solve them. The colorful illustrations show her in bright colors, laying on the floor to draw, creating sketches, and doing other things that were not considered acceptable to society ladies. You are a Star, Jane Goodall Written by Dean Robbins and illustrated by Hatem Aly This informative book teaches kids about Jane Goodall and the amazing work that she did with chimpanzees. The text is broken up into easy to read sections in her voice, with sidebars highlighting interesting tidbits about her life. The brightly colored illustrations show how she worked closely with the animals and got to know them. In the back of the book, there is more information about her life and career, as well as an author's note and an introduction to her chimpanzee friends. Tiny Jumper: How Tiny Broadwick Created the Parachute Rip Cord Written by Candy Dahl and illustrated by Maithili Joshi Tiny Broadwick was a young girl who dreamed of flying through the air. She became the first woman to parachute from an airplane, and had the idea to create the rip cord. The text follows her from childhood through adulthood, showing all of her accomplishments, and some of her many many jumps. The back of the book includes a note from the author about her life, as well as real photographs of her. Comet Chaser Written by Pamela S. Turner and illustrated by Vivien Mildenberger This picture book biography introduces readers to Caroline Herschel, a woman who turned her interest in the night sky into a remarkable scientific career. The book follows her from childhood through adulthood, addressing the obstacles she faced on her way to building a telescope and making incredible discoveries alongside her brother William. The back of the book includes more information about her life, as well as a glossary and resources for the reader. This book is incredibly inspirational as it allows kids to hear from these remarkable women in their voices. The Story of Simone Biles Written by Rachelle Burk This colorfully illustrated chapter book biography teaches readers about Simone Biles and her path to becoming an Olympic gymnast. The pages are full of sidebars including thought provoking questions for readers, as well as infographics, timelines, and more. The end of the book includes a quiz, notes from the author and illustrator, and a glossary. Dear Rebel Edited by Eliza Kirby This compilation includes letters and essays from over 125 women offering life advice and insights to young readers. A wide variety of women share their insights on facing fears, dreaming big, facing obstacles, and more. There are lots of pictures and illustrations throughout the book as well. This is a great book for encouraging young girls to follow their passions and dream big, with lots of successful women sharing their own stories.
