Bright Winter Night by Alli Brydon | GoodreadsBright Winter Night was written by Alli Brydon and illustrated by Ashling Lindsay. This adorable rhyming book follows a group of woodland animals as they work together to build a sleigh to help them make their way to a clearing to spy the Northern Lights. Each animal has a special role, and their teamwork allows them to witness the magic of the Northern Lights together. The bold and beautiful illustrations manage to capture the sparkle of the winter night through very few colors.

We really enjoyed this book and the tale of cooperation it told while celebrating the beauty of a winter night. The soothing text and illustrations make it a great bedtime book for cold winter nights. We were inspired by the story and the illustrations to create our own Northern Lights painting project.

Painting the Northern Lights

First we started with a plain sheet of black construction paper. Along the bottom of the page, we used white crayon to draw the shapes of some of the woodland animals watching the beautiful skies above them. Then we added chalk “stars” across the black page as well.

Next, we poured thin streams of white, blue, and green paint along an curve across the top and middle of the page. Before the paint could dry, we took forks, and pulled the paint upwards, just like the illustrations in the book.
