BYJU’s Magic Workbooks featuring Disney are curriculum based workbooks that feature your child’s favorite Disney characters. These heavy duty workbooks work with the Osmo system, whose base and reflector utilize the camera on your tablet or iPad. The kit includes an Osmo base and reflector, a WizPen and eraser, and a set of books. We had the opportunity to check out the Grade 3 set which included 8 books covering Language & Reading and Math.
The Osmo System
These books use the Osmo system to bring the page to life. As kids mark their answers in the workbook, the app reacts to those answers and applauds correct answers while correcting incorrect answers. The Osmo system includes a base and a reflector which allows the camera on your iPad or device to “read” the page in the workbook. There are lots of amazing programs available to use with the Osmo system, but for today we wanted to highlight the new BYJU’s Magic Workbooks featuring Disney.
The Workbooks
Each workbook starts with directions for how to set up the Osmo base and reflector to work with your workbook. The simple text and illustrations make it easy for kids to set up the system on their own. There are also tips for using the BYJU’s WizPen and getting the reflector to read the answers on the page.
Each page of the workbooks features a different activity with simple instructions and colorful illustrations of their favorite Disney characters. The workbook activities build on each previous page, increasing in difficulty and offering repeated opportunities to practice certain skills. The WizPen can be used to circle or enter answers on each page, and then erased with the included eraser after the answers are accepted by the app.
The App
When kids open the BYJU’s Learning app on their device, they will be encouraged to create an account, or sign in to their account. Then they will be able to open their personalized learning journey. There are tons of games and stories that kids can explore on their own on the app, as well as a section that allows them to interact with the workbooks.
Jane, an adorable cartoon character, walks users through the steps of using the workbook. When kids set the workbook up under the reflector, the app allows the device to recognize the answers entered on each page. As they answer the problems on the page, the device will give them credit for correct answers while marking incorrect answers.
Like the other Osmo products, the app includes a section for parents. This section provides a progress report showing what their children are doing on the app and what areas they are excelling in or need to focus on. This section is a huge help for parents who want to guide their children on the learning journey and help them focus on the skills they need to practice.
Our Thoughts
I love a good old fashioned workbook, so the fact that this app and this system brings these to life for kids was a win in my book. Especially since it features our favorite Disney characters! These workbooks feature simple activities that allow kids to practice necessary skills in language and math, which is a great way to solidify those skills.
Little Bookworm says, “Byjus is the best! When your kids go into school, they’ll know more than they already knew and their teachers are going to be BLOWN away!”
Little Bookworm was excited to try it out and she did several pages in one sitting, even though they are technically above her grade level. But she enjoyed showing the skills that she did know, and she learned some new skills as well. She especially loved the pages that used mazes and matching to let her practice.
Every so often the reflector didn’t read the page or her markings correctly, but it was easy to readjust and have it scan the page again. The only hiccup we had was that the WizPen isn’t that easy to erase completely. It took a bit of work to get the lines erased, but at the end of the day, that isn’t that big of a deal.
I think this set is a fun way to get kids practicing necessary skills, and the addition of the BYJU’s app makes it seem less like work and more like play. This is a win for both kids and adults!
