My Grandma’s Photos was written by Ozge Bahar Sunar and illustrated by Senta Urgan. This book was originally published in Turkey and was translated by Amy Marie Spangler. The story follows a young boy named Ali whose grandmother doesn’t hear, see, or remember very well anymore. But Ali likes spending time with her, so he sits with her and together they share stories and memories over a trunk of her photos. The illustrations are punctuated with actual photographs and mementos, bringing the memories to life for the reader.

This book is a great way to explore the connection between grandparents and grandkids, and to encourage kids to talk to their grandparents about their memories.

Questionnaire for Grandkids and Grandparents

There is so much that we can learn from our grandparents. And it is so important to talk to them and learn from them while they are still with us. This Grandparent interview is a fun way to jump start the conversation between grandkids and their grandparents. It ranges from simple memories to advice about life, offering plenty of opportunities for little ones to connect with their elders. My daughter loves hearing stories about her grandparents when they were younger, so she came up with a lot of these questions herself for other kids to use.

In the book, the main character’s grandmother wants to show him how much he looks like his grandfather. This inspired us to create a side by side photo frame that Little Bookworm could use to see herself next to her grandparents. Print out this photo frame mat and then add a 4×6 photo of your child’s grandparent on the left and a 4×6 photo of your child on the right. This mat is an 8×10 so it can fit into an 8×10 frame.

In addition to sharing memories and stories from the past, this book can be a jumping off point to making new memories. Get an empty jar and then place it somewhere central in your home with some colorful paper and a pen. As they create new memories or stories with their grandparents, they can write or draw about it and add it to the jar. This is not only a visual reminder of all the memories they are creating, but it can be lots of fun to take them out and read them.
