These bird books for kids are a fun way to teach kids about birds!Little Bookworm loves learning about different kinds of birds. We love watching the different birds that visit our neighbor’s bird feeder, and after her class watched baby chickens hatch, she became even more enamored with baby birds. So we were thrilled to check out these new bird books for kids!

Chickens on the Loose

Written by Jane Kurtz and illustrated by John Joseph

This funny rhyming book follows a group of chickens as they run around a city causing mayhem. As they make their way around town, they visit all kinds of places, from a yoga studio and a clothing shop to a food truck and a pet store. Their actions upend the days of the people around the city, and kids will love shouting “Stop!” along with the people in the book. The back of the book includes information about keeping urban chickens.

So You Want to Be an Owl

Written by Jane Porter and illustrated by Maddie Frost

This informative guide is full of interesting facts about owls. The book joins Professor Olaf the owl as he walks the reader through simple lessons about how to be a good owl. Kids will appreciate the funny and easy to understand text, as well as the adorable cartoon illustrations featuring lots of little owls as they go through the lessons. The book encourages kids to try their hand at owl sounds and movements, and awards them an honorary position on the owl team at the end of the book.

Pirate Chicken: All Hens on Deck

Written by Brian Yanish and illustrated by Jess Pauwels

This funny book follows Lily, a chicken who dreams of more. When a band of pirates attacks the farm, Lily and the other chickens find themselves floating at sea. But Lily sees this as her opportunity for more and takes charge of the chicken pirate crew. Kids will love watching the chickens acting as pirates, and Lily’s thirst for adventure.

Chicken Little: The Real and Totally True Tale

Written by Sam Wedelich

This funny and interesting retelling of the classic tale follows the little chicken as he struggles to decide if the sky is falling. The text is all made up of dialogue between Chicken Little, the sky, and the other chickens who are starting to panic. The illustrations are hilarious, featuring the stressed chicken and his panicking friends as they run around everywhere.

Chicken Little and the Big Bad Wolf

Written by Sam Wedelich

In this sequel to Chicken Little: The Real and Totally True Tale, the story sees the jittery chicken come face to face with the big bad wolf. As the other chickens start to panic, Chicken Little takes the time to investigate and see if he is really as big and scary as they think. The funny dialogue is paired with hilarious illustrations that will have kids laughing out loud while they learn the important lesson of not judging a book by it’s cover.

Catch That Chicken!

Written by Atinuke and illustrated by Angela Brooksbank

This story follows a young girl named Lami who is the best chicken catcher in her whole village. But when she chases a particularly difficult chicken up a tree, she injures her ankle and can’t chase chickens anymore. How will she continue to be the best chicken catcher? This book highlights ingenuity and thinking outside the box, while the illustrations are full of chickens and the chaos that life with chickens can bring.

Duck!

Written by Meg McKinlay and illustrated by Nathaniel Eckstrom

When a duck spies something falling from the sky, he runs around the farm yelling “Duck!” and trying to warn the other animals. But the animals just think that he is confused on what type of animal they are. Kids will love the silly way the animals react to the duck’s warning and the way the repeating text builds. They will also enjoy the funny illustrations and the twist ending.

Sing Some More

Written by Deborah Diesen and illustrated by Howard Gray

This book celebrates the beauty of birdsong, even when it affects our days. The rhyming text follows a group of birds as they sing their way through a day. They are proud of their skills, and they crow about their musical abilities, using music vocabulary that is defined in the back of the book. This beautiful book shares the journey of a flock of swifts as they make their migration. The story begins with a young girl named Cassi who has nursed an injured swift back to health. As she lets it go, it begins it’s flight along with the rest of the flock. The breathtaking illustrations show the kinds of weather the flock faces and the gorgeous sights they will see along the way. This is a beautiful book to introduce kids to migration, and the incredible path that birds take every year.

The Magnificent Book of Birds

Written by Tom Jackson and illustrated by Walerczuk

This large, beautiful guidebook introduces readers to all kinds of birds. Each two page spread focuses on a different bird, with large text, detailed illustrations, and bullet point lists of facts, making it less intimidating for kids to dive in. Each bird also has a small fact file with quick facts including weight, lifespan, habitat, and more. This is a great resource for kids interested in learning more about our feathered friends.
