Silly Hair Books for Kids

Check out how we paired silly hair books for kids with some fun hair activities to develop scissor skills. Little Bookworm has had long hair since she was born. She hasn’t always liked having her hair done, or having it cut, so silly hair books for kids, and fun hair crafts and activities make the process a lot easier to handle! We are excited to share some of our favorite children’s books about hair and hair cuts, and the hair activities that we paired with them.

On Account of the Gum

Written and illustrated by Adam Rex

In this hilarious story, a young girl falls asleep with gum in her mouth. When she wakes up, the gum is in her hair. The narrator shares a variety of ideas to get the gum out, leading to a bigger (and more ridiculous) mess. The rhyming text is written in a handwritten font in a variety of colors, giving the story a more frantic feeling. The illustrations are creative and a bit insane, and they are sure to make kids laugh out loud. In true Adam Rex fashion, the end of the book has an even funnier twist.

Crazy Hair Creative Art

We had a lot of fun turning this book into our own art project. First, we started with a blank sheet of paper. I drew a half circle at the bottom to represent the top of the head. Next, we squeezed a trail of glue in twists and tangles around the page, and laid a piece of brown yarn along the glue lines. Once the glue dried, we used markers, stickers, and colored pencils to add our own drawings to the hair. Let kids get creative about what could get caught in the hair, and see what silly situations they come up with. Little Bookworm had a lot of fun creating this one, and we will keep adding to it.

Sheep Dog and Sheep Sheep Baaad Hair Day

Written and illustrated by Eric Barclay

In this fun book, Sheep can’t see past the wool in her eyes. Sheep Dog tries to convince her to get a hair cut during Shearing Day, but Sheep doesn’t want to lose her curls. She tries to find all kinds of ways to escape getting her wool cut, but in the end she learns that a hair cut isn’t that bad. And it is a lesson that Sheep Dog may need to learn too! Kids will love the adorable characters in the story, and the silly excuses that Sheep comes up with to avoid Shearing Day.

Sheep Dog Hair Cutting Craft

We were inspired by this cute book to create our own hair cutting craft. We started with paper plates, and drew a dog face on the inner circle. Next, we cut strips of gray yarn and taped them along the back of the plate, so they lay over the face on the front.

hair cutting activity for kidsThen Little Bookworm used her scissors to give the Sheep Dog a hair cut, and clear her hair out of her eyes. She had a lot of fun trimming the “hair” and uncovering Sheep Dog’s face underneath the overgrown hair. She loved this activity so much that she asked to create another one right away.

Lion Needs a Haircut

Written and illustrated by Hyewon Yum

In this sweet story, a little lion cub and his dad head to the barbershop. Little Lion doesn’t want a haircut, but his dad insists that he needs one. As they continue to argue, Little Lion shares that he wants to look just like his dad, and that perhaps Dad needs a haircut too. The funny back and forth arguing between father and son may be very relatable to parents and kids reading the story together. The colored pencil illustrations highlight the sweet relationship between father and son as well.

Scissors Skills Printable Page

One of Little Bookworm’s favorite scissors skills to practice is fringing. So the lions in this story inspired me to create a lion mane cutting page that would allow her to cut a fringed mane. Print out this free printable page, and give kids a pair of scissors. Encourage them to cut along the dotted lines, stopping at the ends so the paper is fringed along the edges. You could even cut holes in the eyes and make it into a mask!
