These Halloween books for kids range from sweet to scary, ensuring a little spooky fun for everyone.

That Monster on the Block

This sweet book uses monster characters to share a story about kindness, acceptance, and not judging others. When someone moves into Vampire’s old home, Monster is curious about his new neighbor. He is shocked when it’s not a goblin, ogre, or dragon, but a clown! He tries to get the other neighbors to join him in avoiding the clown, but the clown is able to win them over. Will Monster be able to see that his first impression may have been wrong? Kids will love the silly characters and the brightly colored illustrations.
How to Build a Haunted House
Written by Frank Tupta and illustrated by Kyle Beckett
When a Vampire family moves to town, it will take all of the spooky creatures working through the night to get the house ready. The rhyming text takes the reader through the process of building a house, with fun spins on regular construction vehicles. Everyone pitches in, from skeletons and monsters to witches and werewolves, to get the job done. It’s Halloween Little Monster

This adorable book follows a little monster and his Papa as they go trick or treating for the first time. As they make their way around the neighborhood visiting houses, Papa helps Little Monster to be brave in the face of scary sights. But if Papa gets scared, will Little Monster be brave? The rhyming text is paired with adorable illustrations of the monster and his Papa. Kids will love the sweet story, and the reminder that even grownups get scared sometimes.

I Love My Fangs
Written by Kelly Leigh Miller
What happens when a young Dracula loses one of his famous fangs? This book is a fun spin on the classic story of losing a tooth and meeting the tooth fairy. When Dracula’s fang falls out, he starts to panic and tries to hold on to it. But his parents explain that it just means that his adult teeth are coming in. The text is minimal and sometimes silly, and the illustrations are full of action. The story will resonate with little ones who are worried about losing their teeth, while also making them laugh out loud.
Gustavo the Shy Ghost
Written by Flavia Z. Drago
Gustavo is a ghost who loves doing ghostly things, and also loves playing the violin. But Gustavo is painfully shy, and finds it difficult to make friends. One day, he decides to face his fear and invites all of the monsters to his violin concert. Can he be brave enough to put himself out there and start making friends? The story is a great one for kids who are shy, as well as to explain shyness and being welcoming to other children. The illustrations are fully of fun spooky details, and kids will fall in love with the adorable ghost character.
The Little Kitten
Written by Nicola Killen
This beautifully illustrated book follows a young girl named Ollie and her cat named Pumpkin as they head outside to play in the leaves. When a wind gust blows the leaf pile away, Ollie and Pumpkin find a kitten hiding underneath. The three of them start to play together, and soon come across posters with the kitten’s face on them. Ollie decides to find the kitten’s home, but soon loses Pumpkin. Will she be able to reunite both cats with their owners? The illustrations are mostly done in black and white, with pops of orange and orange foil throughout. Several of the pages include cut outs, leading the reader to the next page. Kids will love following the story of Ollie and Pumpkin, and finding the hidden answer of the kitten’s owner in the illustrations.

Vampires of Blinsh
Written by Daniel Pinkwater and illustrated by Aaron Renier
This silly and spooky book takes the reader on a trip to the village of Blinsh in the country of Pinksylvania. The text introduces the reader to the vampire residents of Blinsh, and attempts to explain away the misconceptions that people have about vampires. While the text is full of silly suggestions and situations, it may be enjoyed more by older children. The illustrations use very dark colors, and are full of tons of small details for readers to find.
Bears and Boos
Written by Shirley Parenteau
This cute book for little ones follows a group of little bears as they get their costumes ready for Halloween. When one of them is knocked down and misses out on the chance to grab a costume, all of her friends offer help getting her dressed. This sweet story of friendship combines rhyming text and adorable illustrations.

By Martin Handford
Waldo is wandering around in the dark in this spooky seek and find book. Follow the sneaky character as he heads to a haunted castle, exploring all the dark corners within. Readers can slide a paper wand behind dark screens to illuminate a little bit of the image at a time.

Poesy is a young girl who loves reading her monster book. When night falls at bedtime, she isn’t ready for sleep, but instead stays up to fight off the monsters. The text uses speech bubbles and snippets from the monster book to tell the story, while the illustrations are dark and a bit scary, but feature a strong little girl saving the day.
