Do your kids want to be superheroes? It feels like a rite of passage for kids. Maybe it’s the super powers, maybe it is the desire to make a difference, or maybe it is the cool costumes! Today I am excited to share a funny new superhero book for kids, and some silly activities to pair with it!

Super Rooster Saves the Day was written by Maureen Wright and illustrated by Rob McClurkan. This funny story follows a rooster named Ralph who wants to be a superhero. He tries to show off his superpowers, but the other animals on the farm don’t believe in him – except his friend Rosie the pig. Rosie believes that Ralph can do anything he sets his mind to. With her support, Ralph is able to find his inner power boost and save the day – even if it doesn’t necessarily need saving.

This adorable superhero book uses catchy, action-filled text to tell the story, which will make kids want to get up and dance. Kids will also love the colorful illustrations highlighting the silly animals, and the funny situations that Ralph gets himself into. Adults will appreciate the sweet messaging in the story about the power of friendship, and believing in yourself.

Rooster Superhero Puppet

We had so much fun reading about Ralph, that we decided to make our own Ralph puppets. We started with a brown paper bag, and pieces of red, yellow, white, and blue construction paper. I traced my daughter’s hand on the red paper and had her cut it out. Then we glued it to the top of the bag. Next, we cut out two white circles and glued them to the top of the bag flap for his eyes. We cut out a yellow triangle and glued it to the bottom of the flap as a beak. Next we cut out a shorts shape out of blue paper and glued it to the bottom of the bag. Lastly, we cut a long triangle out of yellow paper and cut the top point off, making a cape shape, and glued it to the back of the bag. My daughter loves flying her rooster puppet around the room and pretending to save the day.

Chicken Dance

In the story, Ralph finds the power to be a superhero when he hears the “Chicken Dance” song. The catchy text and adorable illustrations of the animals doing the dance inspired us to do the same! You can find the song on various streaming services, as well as on Youtube. Turn it up and do the Chicken Dance together! It is guaranteed to bring you lots of laughs, and maybe a power boost of your own!

Fine Motor Corn Pickup

When crows start to swarm the corn field, Ralph takes it upon himself to save the corn from them. This scene inspired us to play a fun game with crows and corn that also helps kids practice their fine motor skills.

First, I colored a clothespin black and added eyes to the top to make a crow. Next, I scattered kernels of corn around the table. My daughter and I took turns rolling a die, and then picking up that number of kernels with the clothespin crow and placing it into a bucket.

I’m a Superhero

With the help of his friend, and a silly song, Ralph is able to find his own power and save the day. This inspired us to talk about the types of superpowers that we would want to have, and how we would use them. I created this printable Superhero coloring page to give my daughter the opportunity to create her own superhero costume, and explain what type of superhero she would want to be.
