Do you use flashcards with your kids? Have you avoided flash cards because you think of yourself sitting across from your kids flipping through them? Forget that picture. There are tons of fun ways to use flash cards. From sensory bins to active games, you can utilize them in lots of fun ways. And it can be really easy to make them, and make them durable. Today I wanted to share how to make flash cards and create reusable school supplies right at home.
This year, I decided to start working with my daughter on sight words. To get her excited about them, I decided to create different themed games using sight word flashcards. Since these games usually involve a lot of activity or messy supplies, I wanted to create easy and durable flash cards that could take a lot of abuse.
Duck® Brand Clear Laminate is a great way to cover school items, like flash cards. The removable adhesive and the grid backing makes it easy to measure and cut accurately. Once the items are covered, it is easy to wipe them clean. I was really excited to use this clear laminate to cover our sight word flash cards, and it made it very easy. Once they were covered, they were much more durable, which is necessary for our active learning style.
How to Make Flashcards
You can either create your own flashcards, or print or buy pre-made ones. Measure your flash cards along the grid backing, including a 1/4 inch border along each side. You can either create one flash card at a time, or lay out several on a larger sheet and cut them apart. I tried one at a time at first because the laminate can roll easily instead of laying flat. But once you peel the backing off, it lays pretty flat.

Peel the backing off of your measured sheet of laminate. This was very easy to do. Carefully lay your cards down on the sticky side. It wasn’t too difficult to lift the cards off and reposition if there was a ripple in the laminate, but still easier to avoid them in the first place if possible.
Lay another measured sheet of laminate over the other side of the card, careful to press the two sticky sides together slowly to avoid bubbles or wrinkles. Trim the edges carefully.
Fun Ways to Use Flash Cards
We have used our flashcards in lots of fun ways. Add them to sensory bins, like your sandbox, or a tray of water beads. Scatter them around your house or your yard and have kids find them. Add wings and make sight word bugs. Use food or small manipulatives to practice addition or subtraction problems on flash cards. By laminating your flash cards, you make them durable and easy to clean, so you can try all of these activities over and over again.
How Else to Use Duck® Brand Clear Laminate
Duck® Brand Clear Laminate can be used to cover lots of printed school materials. From tracing books and dramatic play printables to bookmarks and flashcards, there are tons of ways that you can use it to make your printables reusable.
Dramatic Play
My daughter loves to play pretend, and we are often using dramatic play printables like these to add to our games. Laminate pretend menus, order forms, or doctor charts and provide kids with dry erase markers that they can use on them. Just wipe them clean after each game and use them again.
Tracing
My daughter is sometimes picky about writing and practicing her letters. But she is almost always up for tracing. Laminate tracing pages or other printed words to provide kids with opportunities to practice forming letters over and over again.
Bookmarks
Get kids excited about reading with bookmarks that they can create and color. Duck® Brand Clear Laminate can easily transform printed paper into more durable bookmarks that can stand up to young readers.
