When it comes to bedtime, we love ending our routine with a soothing bedtime book for kids. Whether the stories are soothing, silly, or sentimental, our nightly reading always ends with a bedtime story meant to lull my daughter to sleep. So I am always on the lookout for great children’s books about bedtime to add to our rotation. This list highlights some of our latest favorites, including some familiar characters we know and love.

Rosie the Dragon and Charlie Say Goodnight

Written by Lauren H. Kerstein and illustrated by Nate Wragg

In this follow up to Rosie the Dragon and Charlie Make Waves, Charlie and his pet dragon Rosie are back to tackle bedtime. Charlie tells the reader that bedtime hasn’t been going well lately, and shows the bedtime schedule that they will be following. Kids will recognize the familiar bedtime routines, and will love the silly ways that Rosie puts off actually going to bed. The hilarious illustrations highlight the difficulties of putting a dragon (and often a child) to bed. Both parents and kids will appreciate the silliness of the story, and the way these two adorable characters make bedtime fun.

Scared of the Dark? It’s Really Scared of You

Written by Peter Vegas and illustrated by Benjamin Chaud

This book turns the fear of the dark on it’s head by telling kids that the dark is afraid of them. The text explores all of the ways that the dark hides from kids during the day and what it does at night. The illustrations portray the dark as a large, silly creature, encouraging kids to think twice about what they are afraid of.

Woodland Dreams

Written by Karen Jameson and illustrated by Marc Boutavant

This poetic book says goodnight to creatures all through the woods. Each animal has it’s own small verse. The text is accompanied by dark illustrations showing each animal interacting with a young girl in the woods, and then sleeping in their own homes. Kids will love seeing how each of these animals sleeps, and imagining their own woodland night adventures.

Construction Site Mission: Demolition

Written by Sherri Duskey Rinker and illustrated by AG Ford

Follow the beloved construction site crew as they once again head out for a big job together. Today they are excited to start demolition on a building, paving the way for a new construction site full of possibilities. Like the other books in the series, each truck gets some attention. The rhyming text and detailed illustrations showcase the different jobs that they do. In the end, the story leaves the trucks sleeping, and preparing for the exciting adventures that await them tomorrow. Kids will love revisiting these adorable truck friends, and watching them complete a new project together.

Snoozapalooza

Written by Kimberlee Gard and illustrated by Vivian Miniker

This colorful counting book follows a group of 10 animals as they settle in for hibernation, one by one. The rhyming text is paired with adorable illustrations of animals of all sizes. In the end, the other woodland creatures gather together to wake up the ten sleeping animals, who decide to come back the next year. Kids will love counting along as the animals join in the big slumber party, as well as the brightly colored illustrations.

Let’s Get Sleepy

Written by Tony Cliff

This fun seek and find book follows a group of cats as they try to find a little mouse named Sleepy. The cats head out to explore, venturing from their neighborhood to mountaintops, fantastical places, and even the moon! On each two page spread, the busy illustrations are bursting with details, and a little hidden mouse. The rhyming text moves the story along, interspersed with shouted refrains of “Let’s Get Sleepy!”. Kids will love searching for the little mouse, and parents will love the double meaning of the title as the kittens find themselves getting sleepy after all of their adventures.
