I have been interested in yoga and mindfulness for years, and my daughter has loved trying out yoga moves since she was able to walk. In recent years, we have been putting a big focus on mindfulness and breathing techniques to help her deal with big emotions. So since the quarantine started, we have been practicing yoga and mindfulness every day through Cosmic Kids Yoga. So I was thrilled to receive these new kids books about yoga and mindfulness to help with our new practice.

Y is for Yoga
Written by Greg Paprocki
This board book explores the practice of yoga by pairing each letter of the alphabet with a different yoga related word. Some of the letters focus on a different pose like Downward Dog, while others highlight other aspects of yoga, including Mats and Namaste. The illustrations are colorful and feature a diverse cast of children. The retro illustration style will entertain both kids and adults.

Unicorn Yoga
Written by Gina Cascone and Bryony Williams Sheppard and illustrated by Jennifer Sattler
This brightly colored yoga guide uses clear instructions to introduce readers to simple yoga poses. The illustrations feature a fun unicorn yoga teacher that kids will love mimicking. The back of the book includes more information for kids about yoga and mindfulness, as well as how they can start their own yoga practice. This is a great way to grab the attention of young unicorn lovers and engage them in yoga and mindfulness practices.
A Little Space for Me
Written by Jennifer Gray Olson
This book is especially important right now when the world can feel a little overwhelming and people are at home together a lot more. The story follows a little girl as she attempts to find a little space for herself when things get too loud, too crowded, or too overwhelming. The text uses relatable language to remind kids that it is okay to feel like they need a moment to collect themselves. Meanwhile, the illustrations play with the phrase “a little space”. They show the little girl reaching up and grabbing a little piece of “space” from the skies and keeping it with her. The metaphor of always keeping that little quiet space with you is a great way to illustrate mindfulness to kids.

Mindfulness Resources for Kids
When it comes to meditation, I always think of that scene from Eat, Pray, Love where she attempts to meditate but watches her thoughts race around and soon discovers it has only been a few minutes. I felt the same way! So I totally understand why it is difficult for kids to calm themselves down and focus on their thoughts. So I wanted to share some of our favorite resources to help.
One of my favorite resources for teaching meditation and mindfulness to kids (besides books), has been the Zen Den from Cosmic Kids Yoga. We started doing some of the videos after they caught my daughter’s eye, and they have been really helpful in engaging her in simple meditation and mindfulness exercises.
Calm Down Kit
To help my daughter combat big emotions and remind her of the coping strategies that she has learned through her mindfulness training, I created the printable resources in this bundle. We use these exact printables in our home and they have been hugely helpful! I was actually inspired to make this after I saw the huge changes in my daughter’s behavior. The bundle includes a reset button with a handprint, so kids can physically remind themselves to center their minds and calm their breathing. There are also mindfulness cards and a set of mindfulness dice which kids can use when they need a reminder of an activity to calm themselves. I really hope they help your family like they have helped us.
