The love between parents and kids is an amazing thing. It can be so hard to put the depth of our feelings into words so that our kids can understand. But these children’s books about parental love can help you share those feelings, especially while you are curled up together before bed!

World So Wide
Written by Alison McGhee and illustrated by Kate Alizadeh
This beautifully illustrated book encourages the reader to think about the youngest person in the world at this moment, and what firsts they are experiencing. The narrator then points out to their child that they were also the youngest person in the world at some point, and shares sweet memories of those same firsts. The sweet, soothing text and brightly colored illustrations make this a great story for reading to your little ones while curled up together and reminiscing about their early life. The ending gives a parent’s wish for their child to experience the same kind of amazing love when they get to look into the eyes of their own child someday too.
I Love You All Ways
Written and illustrated by Marianne Richmond
This adorable board book shares all of the ways that parents love their children. The sweet rhyming text explains that parents love their kids whether they are near or far, happy or sad, loud or quiet, and all the other things in between. The text rings true for parents reading it to their little ones. The illustrations are full of cute animal parents and kids doing the same things that we do. Kids and adults will both love this affirmation of the strength of parental love.

One More Hug
Written by Megan Alexander and illustrated by Hiroe Nakata
Move over Love You Forever, there is a new book that will make parents tear up. This book follows a mother and her young son as he grows up. When he is young, he is always asking his mom for “one more hug”. As he grows, these hugs become more important, and he continues to ask for them when he needs reassurance. At the end, the boy is all grown up and ready to go out into the world on his own. As the mother watches him drive away, she wishes for just “one more hug”. Does the little boy have one more surprise up his sleeve?
I am not kidding when I tell you I was having a hard time reading this to my daughter the first time because of the tears. But they were the sweetest kind of tears, and this has become one of my new favorites for reminding both kids and parents, that the strong love and need for reassurance goes both ways.
Like the Moon Loves the Sky
Written by Hena Khan and illustrated by Saffa Khan
This bold and vibrant picture book uses striking illustrations and lyrical text inspired by the Quran to share the unconditional love of a parent. The text shares all of the amazing characteristics that the parent narrator respects and loves about their child. The beginning of the book explains the phrase “inshallah” that is used throughout the book and shares how it can be found in many different languages and cultures. I love the way that the author’s note ties us all together to celebrate the universal beauty of parental love.

Over the Moon

This sweet and funny story follows two wolves who find a baby floating down the river and decide to take her in. After the one convinces the other not to eat her, they decide to raise her and teach her right and wrong. One day, she sees other children in the woods, and she realizes that she needs to leave home and go out on her own. The story and the illustrations include funny moments that had my daughter laughing out loud. The story also reassures that reader that children who are loved have everything they need to go out into the world on their own.

The mother shares all of the times during the day that she thinks about her little one, and the ways she reminds herself of her daughter’s love even when they are apart. At the end of the day, they come back together, and the mother reminds her child that they are always together, even when they are apart.
