Multicultural Children’s Book Day
The goal of Multicultural Children’s Book Day is to bring awareness to diverse children’s books and to get more multicultural books into schools and libraries. It’s vitally important for kids to see themselves in the books around them, and for them to see their friends and classmates reflected in them as well. Since we love children’s books, this is a cause that is close to my heart!
As Cory’s parents try to comfort him, he tells his father that he knows boys aren’t supposed to cry. His father tells him that it is okay to cry when he is sad, and then he starts to cry as well. In the end, Cory comes up with a healthy way to start working through his feelings of grief and devastation.

Teaching Lessons Through Literature
This book not only addresses the topic of grief and loss, but also lays the foundation for important conversations about showing emotion, letting yourself be sad, and dealing with tragic events in the community around you. These are all incredibly important and relevant topics that lots of families are attempting to discuss with their kids every time another horrible tragedy hits the news. The book includes a foreword and introduction, explaining the inspiration of the story, as well as resource lists and important tips for talking to kids about grief. This is a great resource for families, and can definitely help start conversations in your home.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/31/20) is in its 7th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.
Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school
