Are your kids fans of Gigantosaurus? Since the television show premiered on Disney Junior, my daughter has been a fan of the prehistoric pals featured on the show, and the titular character that they think of as a friend. So we were thrilled when we were given the opportunity to check out some new books based on the show, and pair it with some fun dinosaur activities for kids!

The Story of Gigantosaurus introduces the reader to the adorable dinosaur characters from the TV show. The text explores the various characteristics of Tiny, Bill, Mazu and Rocky, as well as Gigantosaurus. The illustrations are vibrant and colorful, with funny speech bubbles showing the personalities of the little dinosaurs.
Gigantosaurus: Don’t Cave In follows Rocky, Bill, Mazu, and Tiny as they find themselves in a cave inhabited by the frightening Shriekosaurus. As they make their way through the cave, they learn how to make each other brave and not cave in to their fears.
Gigantosaurus: The Lost Egg shows what happens when Rocky, Tiny, Bill and Mazu find an egg all alone. They travel all around the jungle looking for the egg’s family, and learn some important lessons about caring for a little egg.
Dinosaur Scale Painting
The end pages of the paperback versions of these books feature illustrations of dinosaur scales. So we decided to create our own dinosaur scale patterns using bubble wrap and green paint. I squeezed some green paint onto a plate and bunched up a couple small squares of bubble wrap. My daughter then dipped the bubble wrap into the paint and stamped it onto white paper. She had a lot of fun painting and loved seeing the scales that she was creating.

Dinosaur Egg Hatching
Inspired by the hatching egg in the story, we decided to create some dinosaur eggs that we could hatch on our own. I mixed 1/2 cup of white flour with 1/4 cup of coffee grounds. Next I added a 1/4 cup of salt and slowly added water while stirring. When the dough formed, I wrapped several small dinosaur toys with the dough and placed them on a cookie sheet in an oven set at 150 degrees. I let them bake for 30 minutes and then set them out to cool. Once they were cool to the touch, I let my daughter hatch them open. She was so excited to find the little dino toys inside!

Dinosaur Egg Painting
In Gingantosaurus: The Lost Egg, the missing egg had a red speckled shell. We decided to create our own dinosaur egg paintings inspired by the illustrations in the book. I drew an egg shape onto a piece of white paper and poured some red and orange paints onto a plate. Next, I bunched up a bit of tissue paper and we dipped it into the paints and dabbed it onto the bottom of the egg shape.
Dinosaur Stomp
Gigantosaurus makes his presence known to all of the other dinosaurs with his giant footsteps that shake the ground. We had a lot of fun acting this out. The theme song for the show has a great beat to it that really inspired us to stomp around and roar just like Giganto. Play the theme song or another peppy song and have kids roar and stomp around the room. Stop the music periodically and have them freeze exactly as they are. This not only gets them moving, but also leads to lots of hilarity and giggles.
