With Father’s Day just around the corner, it is the perfect time to share some beautiful new children’s books about dads and grandfathers. I am so grateful for the relationship that I have with my Dad, and I love watching him build a relationship with my daughter now. So I am always on the lookout for books that showcase that loving relationship between fathers and their kids, and grandfathers and their grandchildren. I remember reading with both of my parents, and it is so fun seeing my daughter share her love of reading with them as well. Written and photographed by Holman Wang
This creative story shares all of the jobs that fathers can have at home. The text uses names for jobs usually found outside the home to describe the many hats that parents sometimes have to wear. The illustrations are created out of detailed needle-felted figurines, which the author makes and photographs. Kids will love the incredible details in the photographed scenes, while parents will appreciate the respect given to all the work they do.
I Love You Like…
Written by Scott Sutton and Alec Traub and illustrated by Glenn Zimmerman
This adorable book about the love between a parent and child has an even sweeter story behind it. The authors were friends in college, and the two decided to write and publish their book when Scott Sutton was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer when his son was only 8 months old. He wanted his son to have this book so he would always remember the love that he had for him. As the grasshopper father in the book is heading to work, his son asks him how much he loves him. His creative answers lead them through lots of fun wordplay, and an exploration of different bugs and animals. The adorable cartoon illustrations and funny text will make parents and kids want to read this one over and over.

Is That Your Dad?

This simple board book follows a little frog as he tries to find his dad. The text is simple, but the interactive illustrations steal the show in this one. Kids will love that each turn of the page transforms the illustrations and changes the faces of the many animals that the frog encounters.
Made for Me
Written by Zack Bush and illustrated by Gregorio De Lauretis
This sweet story is now available in board book form! The rhyming text follows a father as he watches his little one grow and discover the world. The corresponding illustrations are heartwarming and hilarious, showing a giant man caring for the little child. The repeated refrain “You are the one made just for me” celebrates the special relationship between father and child, and reminds kids of the immense love that their father (of father figure) has for them.

The story is sweet and full of wishes from the little girl, while the illustrations use vibrant colors to highlight the different seasons and the emotions felt by the characters.
Grandpa Cacao: A Tale of Chocolate, from Farm to Family

This story follows a young girl and her father as they bake her birthday cake together. As they bake, her father tells her about her grandfather who was a cacao farmer in West Africa. The story shares the struggles of her grandfather and the sacrifices that he made for his family. He reminds her that we are all made of stardust, and we each shine in our own unique ways. The story has as important and sentimental message, and the accompanying illustrations use dark colors and sweet human characters to bring the message home.
