Today’s book series from B.E.S. Publishing (formerly Barron’s Educational Series) is titled Children In Our World. This series dives into important topics that children may be curious about, but we adults have difficulty explaining to them. From conflict and war to racism and refugees, there are lots of topics that kids see in the news and have questions about. This book series tackles these topics in a comforting and easy to understand text. The vibrant illustrations also help the reader to further grasp the concepts without scaring them.
The Books
Poverty and Hunger was written by Louise Spilsbury and illustrated by Hanane Kai. This book addresses the questions that kids may have about people who are poor and hungry. The text also explores things that can cause hunger and poverty, including war and natural disasters.
Refugees and Migrants was written by Ceri Roberts and illustrated by Hanane Kai. This book teaches kids about the reasons why some people leave their homes and become refugees. It also gives kids a glimpse into the lives of refugees once they leave, and what they can expect when they get where they are going.
Racism and Intolerance was written by Louise Spilsbury and illustrated by Hanane Kai. This book tackles the concepts of racism, prejudice, and intolerance. It explains the concepts to kids, but also shares the ramifications that these concepts can have. The text encourages kids to respect differences in others, and find the things that unite us.
Global Conflict was written by Louise Spilsbury and illustrated by Hanane Kai. This book addresses the questions that kids may have about wars and conflicts around the world. The text touches on war and terrorism, and also teaches about avoiding conflict and understanding one another.
Features of the Books
Each book in the series offers a table of contents to help kids navigate through the topics explored in each book. The back of each book also includes resources for further learning, a glossary of important vocabulary words, and an index. These are all important text features for parents and teachers to introduce to kids, and to show them how they can help them to read and understand the text.
Helping Kids to Face Difficult Concepts
The part that I really like about these books, is that each book ends with the sections “Talk about it” and “How You Can Help”. The “Talk about it” section encourages kids to talk to trusted adults about any fears or questions that they may have about the topic. It also comforts the reader by reminding them of the people in the world who are working hard to solve the problems outlined in the book. That point leads to the final section which tells kids how they can help to solve these problems as well. By giving kids actionable steps that they can take to help solve these problems, it can help them to face their fears and worries and feel like they are doing something to change it.
