Little Walks, Big Adventures : Learning in Your Neighborhood

I love taking walks with my daughter. I remember taking her out in her stroller during her first year and singing and talking while we strolled. It was a great way to get out of the house and get some fresh air. As she has grown, our walks have become more varied, but it’s still one of my favorite activities. So I was thrilled when I was given the opportunity to check out today’s book with 50+ ways to turn a walk around your neighborhood into a learning experience!

Making the Most of Your Neighborhood Walks

Little Walks, Big Adventures was written by Erin Buhr. This book is a wonderful introduction for parents to the idea that a simple walk could become a great learning experience. The book is broken down into 4 sections: Home and Community, Vehicles, Animals and Our World. Each section includes 16 different walks revolving around a different theme. (She includes book recommendations for each section as well, which is of course a HUGE plus for me!).

For each walk, she explains why the destination or theme is important to kids, and also includes helpful tips including what to bring, what you should consider and what you should encourage them to stop and take notice of. These tips are simple and color coded, so you can easily take the book with you and read on the move.

Each walk in the book is also paired with fun activities to help extend the learning. These are easy to set up, and the materials and instructions are clearly listed and easy to understand. The activities cover a wide range of developmental skills including cognitive, social/emotional and physical. The author also includes a glossary of terms in the back, so parents can get a greater understanding of the skills that their kids are developing on these adventures.

Our Educational Walks

When my daughter first started walking, she would insist on getting out of the stroller to walk by herself. Our walks became a little slower., but this just gave us more opportunities to look at our surroundings and learn from what was around us.

We started taking lots of themed walks. One of her favorite walks is something that she has named a “Color Safari”. Originally, we started calling out colors as we saw them on our walks around our neighborhood. I happened to find a color wheel matching game at Target a while ago and this made it even more fun. Now she has to hunt for each color so she can add the labeled clothespin to the matching color. Not only is she working on color recognition, but she is also developing her fine motor skills. We’ve taken lots of other themed walks as well.

Why You Should Check Out This Book

This book is so wonderful because it provides you with quick and easy options for those beautiful weather days when you just want to get out of the house, but don’t have any ideas. Each of these walks is it’s own little adventure (something my little one loves to have), giving you lots of fun ways to fill your days. The layout of the book is clear and easy to read, and allows you to use it in whatever way suits your family best. You can do each adventure in order, mix and match them, or look for specific themes in the table of contents or index. There are so many wonderful little ideas and activities in each section that would be just as much fun on their own as they are part of a theme.

I definitely recommend this book to every family with little ones! It is a great reference to have in the house, and may just encourage you to enjoy the world around you a little more as well!
