I love reading books about love with my daughter. With Mother’s Day coming up soon, I decided to come up with a list of great picture books that talk about a mother’s love, and the special bond between a mother and child. These books are a great way to share love with your kids, your own mother, your mom friends, or other mother figures in your life! (Check out my post on funny books about moms too!)

Board Books
My Mom Is There was written by Martin Thomas and illustrated by Ag Jatkowska. This beautiful book is told through the voice of a young child. The child shares all the things that he would do if he could, such as walking on his own or sleeping through the night. While he is learning to do all of these things, he recognizes that his mother is there, being patient and helping him to learn. The sweet words are accompanied by vibrant and colorful illustrations depicting the loving relationship between a mother and child. The interactions between the mother and child will be familiar to parents and kids alike, and parents may be especially moved by the heartwarming message.
I Love My Mommy Because… was written by Laurel Porter Gaylord and illustrated by Ashley Wolff. There are so many reasons to love your mother, and this book lists a variety of them. The simple text is accompanied by adorable illustrations showing a variety of mother and child pairings from around the animal kingdom.
Me and My Mom! was written by Alison Ritchie and illustrated by Alison Edgson. Follow the little bear cub as he spends the day with his mother, celebrating all the things that she is great at. They make daisy chains, swim, balance apples and more. The fun rhyming text and soft and gentle illustrations make it a fun book to read aloud together.
I Love You to the Moon and Back was written by Amelia Hepworth and illustrated by Tim Warnes. Every day is made up of lots of amazing moments to share love with your kids. The rhyming text in this book follows a parent and child bear as they spend the day together. The lovely message and vibrant illustrations are a perfect reminder to find little ways to show love throughout the day.
Mama Loves You So (New Books for Newborns) was written by Terry Pierce and illustrated by Simone Shin. This sweet rhyming book uses descriptions of nature and colorful illustrations to show that a mother’s love is even more beautiful than nature. As part of the New Books for Newborns series, this book is a great one to read to infants, as well as older children.
Mommy Hugs was written and illustrated by Karen Katz. This simple counting board book introduces the variety of hugs that mothers can give to their kids. Each page that describes a type of hug also features a number shown in 3 different forms (the number, the number word and the number depicted in hearts). The adorably sweet illustrations and simple text make this a fun one to read with little ones, and may inspire you to reenact the different hugs.
I Love My Mommy was written by Giles Andreae and illustrated by Emma Dodd. This sweet rhyming board book shares all the reasons why a little boy loves his mother. The text is adorable and the illustrations are bright and heartwarming.
Night Night, Mommy was written by Amy Parker and illustrated by Lee Holland. While the little otter in the story is getting ready for bed, he reminisces about his day with his mother. The sweet rhyming story and the vibrant illustrations make this a great book to read before bedtime, and you may be inspired to add a daily recap to your nightly routine.
Picture Books
I’ve Loved You Since Forever was written by Hoda Kotb and illustrated by Suzie Mason. This book celebrates the timeless love between a parent and child, and shares how they are destined for one another. Written for her newly adopted daughter, Kotb has written a book for all kinds of families. The lovely rhythmic text is paired with vibrant illustrations showing a variety of beautiful nature scenes and lots of animal families.
You Made Me a Mother was written by Laurenne Sala and illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser. This book celebrates the love that a mother feels for her child from the very beginning of pregnancy. The sentimental text and sweet illustrations follow a mother as she shares her thoughts and concerns, as well as the immense gratitude she feels for her child for making her a mother.
Someday was written by Alison McGhee and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds. Each parent has dreams for their child, and this book follows those dreams from the start of a child’s life through the child’s own experiences with parenthood and old age. The simple text and beautiful illustrations impart the love and hope that parents have for their children.
Because Your Mommy Loves You was written by Andrew Clements and illustrated by R.W. Alley. Join a mother and son as they embark on a camping trip together. As the child encounters small struggles, the mother encourages him to be self reliant instead of just doing things for him. The illustrations are colorful and detailed, and the message is an important one for kids who think that their parents are always being too tough on them.
I Love You Mommy was written by Jillian Harker and illustrated by Kristina Stephenson. Mothers Bear has lots of great advice, but Little Bear is too busy to listen. The story has a repeating story line which parents and kids will both recognize and appreciate and the illustrations of the bears are adorable.
Mama, Do You Love Me? was written by Barbara M. Joosse and illustrated Barbara Lavallee. In this tale of motherly devotion set in the Arctic, a young child asks her mother if she loves her. She gives her mother a variety of scenarios and asks again and again if her mother would still love her. The mother’s answers show that she will always love her child, even when she is angry or upset with her. The text is accompanied by beautiful illustrations done in bright and vivid colors and showcasing Arctic life.
Mommies are for Counting Stars was written by Harriet Ziefert and illustrated by Cynthia Jabar. This sweet lift the flap book celebrates all of the special abilities that mommies have. From kissing boo boos to caring for everyone, the book covers lots of familiar scenarios. The easy text is accompanied by cute illustrations and fun flaps for kids to lift and interact with.
I Love You, Mommy was written by Melanie Joyce and illustrated by Polona Lovšin. The adorable little bear in this story shares all of the reasons that he loves his Mommy. The heartwarming text is accompanied by gorgeous and colorful illustrations showing the bears spending time together through all the seasons of the year.
My Mother Is Mine (Classic Board Books) was written by Marion Dane Bauer and illustrated by Peter Elwell. There are so many reasons to celebrate your mother. This book follows a variety of animals and a little girl as they share why their mothers are so wonderful. The simple rhyming text is paired with beautifully soothing illustrations of the animal pairs.
My Mommy Hung the Moon: A Love Story was written by Jamie Lee Curtis and illustrated by Laura Cornell. Sometimes it seems like moms do everything! They help with every part of the day while also trying their hardest to make things right for their little ones. This book celebrates the incredible effect that mothers have on the world through charmingly exaggerated claims and vivid illustrations. Mommy may not have hung the moon, but she certainly would try if her child asked!
