Alphabet books can be a wonderful way to start introducing your children to letters and letter sounds. They provide a fun and often whimsical introduction to all the letters of the alphabet. The stories are oftentimes childhood favorites. In grad school, we studied a wide variety of alphabet books and even created our own versions for a class project. I was amazed at the wide variety of alphabet books available, and I wanted to put together some of the most fun and interactive ones that I have come across.

Now I Know My Avocados by Stephanie Wykoff is a unique hunt through the alphabet. The book is illustrated in a color scheme of white, blues and oranges. Each page focuses on one letter of the alphabet, and the illustrations are full of items starting with that letter. Kids will love searching through the picture for more items, all of which are listed in a key in the back of the book. The open ended style of this book allows for lots of conversation between adults and kids.
Eating the Alphabet was written and illustrated by Lois Ehlert. This colorful stroll through the alphabet introduces the reader to various fruits and vegetables starting with each letter. The illustrations are large and colorful, making you want to eat the foods right off the page. This book is not only a great introduction to upper and lower case letters of the alphabet, but also the healthy and colorful foods that we should be eating every day!
ABC Yoga was written and illustrated by Christiane Engel. Move your way through the alphabet with these fun yoga poses. Each page pairs a letter of the alphabet with an animal starting with that letter, as well as a yoga pose representing that animal. The colorful illustrations show kids performing the poses alongside the animals, encouraging kids to get moving themselves.
Mrs. Peanuckle’s Bug Alphabet was written by Mrs. Peanuckle and illustrated by Jessie Ford. Each page of this colorful book introduces a new bug starting with each letter of the alphabet, as well as an interesting fact about them. The text is accompanied by large and vivid illustrations that will have kids interested in learning more about them. Mrs. Peanuckle also offers similar alphabet books about fruits, vegetables, flowers, trees and birds.
African Animal Alphabet by Beverly and Dereck Joubert is a nonfiction book pairing letters of the alphabet with amazing animals of Africa. Each page introduces the reader to a letter of the alphabet and an animal starting with the same letter. Each animal is shown in beautiful, clear photographs. There are also fun facts and tidbits for each animal, giving kids a little background on the species.
If Rocks Could Sing: A Discovered Alphabet was written and illustrated by Leslie McGuirk. This creative twist on an alphabet book showcases amazing rocks that the author found on a beach near her home. There are rocks shaped like each letter of the alphabet, as well as rocks shaped like various objects starting with each letter. The imaginative photographs make this a fun look through the alphabet. It may also encourage some letter finding of your own.
Museum ABC by The NY Metropolitan Museum of Art walks readers through the alphabet while showcasing some amazing works of art. Each letter corresponds with an object found in lots of famous pieces of art. The text is simple, and the artwork is bright and colorful, covering a range of styles. The index includes information on each piece of art and the artist who created it.
LMNO Peas was written and illustrated by Keith Baker. The playful peas starring in this colorful book take readers through the alphabet by showcasing a variety of careers and hobbies starting with each letter. The letters are large and colorful, and the little peas are lots of fun as they jump from job to job.
AlphaOops!: The Day Z Went First was written by Alethea Kontis and illustrated by Bob Kolar. This zany take on the alphabet follows all the letters as they try to rearrange themselves and get into all sorts of trouble. The bright and colorful illustrations complement the funny story about each letter of the alphabet and their competing personalities.
Z is for Moose was written by Kelly Bingham and illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky. What starts out as a typical alphabet book soon becomes a chaotic mess when a Moose decides to take over. He is so excited for his letter to come up that he jumps in on earlier letters. When the letter M doesn’t feature him, he makes a huge mess throughout the rest of the book. The sweet ending to the story is a nice twist, and the vivid illustrations will keep kids laughing as they watch Moose parade through the alphabet.
