What better way is there to bring a child’s favorite book to life than to create some delicious story inspired snacks together? The story of the Gingerbread Man is a classic tale that has been retold and adapted many different ways over the years. Ten Tiny Gingerbread Men by Tiger Tales is a fun countdown book with sparkly gingerbread men raised off the pages. As the gingerbread men bounce away, kids can count the remaining ones left on the page. The bright illustrations and fun rhyme will keep kids coming back to this story again and again.
Gingerbread Christmas by Jan Brett is another beautiful story about the Gingerbread Baby and his adventures with Matti. They take a band full of gingerbread instruments to the Christmas Festival, but when the people watching their show start to get hungry, they must come up with a quick plan to save the whole band! Kids will love the smart and funny Gingerbread Baby and will enjoy Jan Brett’s beautiful and detailed illustrations.
The Gingerbread Cowboy by Janet Squires is a Western spin on the classic tale. A rancher’s wife decides to change up her daily baking by whipping up some gingerbread dough. She creates a gingerbread cowboy who jumps out of the oven when the rancher opens the door too early. He leads the rancher and his wife on a chase, along with a bunch of hungry animals and some cowboys. The Western flair and playful illustrations give this story a fun twist.
The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Campbell Ernst tells the story of the gingerbread man’s sister. When the old couple decide to make a gingerbread girl, they once again open the oven too early and are lead on a chase by the small cookie. The Gingerbread Girl is more creative than her brother though. Kids will enjoy the cute illustrations and will like the Girl’s trickery.
The Gingerbread Man Loose at Christmas by Laura Murray tells the story of the Gingerbread Man as he works with his classmates to create gifts to thank the town’s community workers. Kids will enjoy the fun cartoon-style illustrations while parents will enjoy the story about doing good deeds and thanking those that help the community.
Gingerbread Mouse by Katy Bratun tells the story of a sweet little mouse who loses her home when a branch lands on it. She eventually finds a little gingerbread house and makes herself at home. With a little help from Santa, she finds a forever home. This is a sweet Christmas story told though colorful and lively illustrations. Kids will love hearing about the little Mouse’s Christmas over and over.
The Gingerbread Boy by Richard Egielski gives the classic story a modern twist. In this version, the cookie is loose in New York City. This beautifully illustrated story takes the chase through the city, with the cookie taunting street musicians, a police officer and more as he tries to flee from the couple who made him. Both parents and kids will enjoy the bright and colorful depictions of city life.

My daughter and I tried this recipe, and the resulting cookies were crisp on the outside but crumbly and soft on the inside. She couldn’t get enough of them!

My toddler loves Gingerbread men. I was actually out searching for cookie mix to make some this year and I went to 4 stores with no luck! We had sugar cookie Gingerbread men–maybe there is a ginger shortage this year 🙂
