The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin

Written by Joe Troiano

This is a great story for teaching kids about tolerance and not judging people for their differences. Spookley is a square pumpkin who cannot roll like the other pumpkins. When a windy day causes the other pumpkins to roll about, Spookley is able to use his square shape to plug up a hole in the fence and save the day! Parents will appreciate Spookley’s ability to use his differences to save the day, while kids will be entertained by the lively illustrations and the colorful pumpkins that grow in the garden.

Miss Fiona's Stupendous Pumpkin Pies by Mark Kimball Moulton | GoodreadsMiss Fiona’s Stupendous Pumpkin Pies

Written by Mark Moulton

This is a rhyming story about an old woman named Fiona who bakes delicious pumpkin pies every Halloween. The kids in the story love visiting Miss Fiona in her creepy house by the cemetery on Halloween, where she serves pie and cider. Kids will enjoy the rhyming pattern and the detailed illustrations, and parents will enjoy the moral that how someone looks doesn’t matter, its the goodness inside that counts. The Biggest Pumpkin Ever by Steven Kroll | Goodreads

This book is a favorite of mine from childhood. Desmond and Clayton are mice who want to have the biggest pumpkin ever, so they each take care of this pumpkin from the very beginning through all of the seasons, not realizing that they are both caring for the same pumpkin. Through their shared efforts, they manage to grow the biggest pumpkin ever! This is a nice story about teamwork. Kids will love the story of Desmond and Clayton while enjoying the fun illustrations.

This board book is a lift-the-flap book that takes a baby around the house looking for her missing pumpkin. As kids search the house by lifting the flaps, they will find a bunch of cute Halloween surprises. This is a good book for babies and young toddlers, as they will enjoy flipping the flaps on the pages.

Click, Clack, Boo!: A Tricky Treat

This another addition to the saga of Farmer Brown’s animals. As I am already a huge fan of these playful farm animals, I could not wait to read their Halloween adventure! Farmer Brown doesn’t like Halloween, but his mischievous animals are planning a Halloween party in the barn. The book has creepy sounds and a mysterious cloaked figure, but kids will love the playful ending. Five Little Pumpkins (Harper Growing Tree) by Public Domain | Goodreads

Five Little Pumpkins

Written by Dan Yaccarino

This is a cute poem that tells of 5 little pumpkins sitting out at night who want to have fun. It is a quick story but the illustrations are adorable and the easy rhyming pattern makes for a fun and entertaining read aloud!

This little board book tells the story of a little pig named Pookie who is trying to figure out what to be for Halloween. Kids will enjoy the fun illustrations as Pookie tries on a bunch of costumes, while parents will appreciate the many reasons Pookie gives for why each costume won’t work (as I’m sure we’ve all had similar conversations!).

Books to Help Kids Face their Fears

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams | Goodreads

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything

Written by Linda Williams

This is a great story about a little old lady who is wandering through the woods and being followed by a bunch of clothes making scary noises. She isn’t afraid though, and she uses her smarts to turn the haunted items into a scarecrow! The haunted items will keep kids entertained with their silly noises and actions. This is a great book for helping kids to face their fears. Check out my previous post on this book to learn more! Go Away, Big Green Monster! by Ed Emberley | Goodreads

Go Away, Big Green Monster!

Written by Ed Emberley

This is a good book for helping kids face their fear of monsters. Each page adds a new spooky feature to the big green monster, then takes each piece away. By slowly building up the monster and then taking parts away from him, kids have power over the monster and can tell him to GO AWAY!

  1. These books bring back so many memories! Halloween books were some of my favorites as a kid. We always had a book fair at school right around Halloween, so buying a couple of new books was a treat. These sound like so much fun to read. Wish I had a little kiddo to read them to. 🙂

  2. Great pics. I love Sandra Boynton’s books. They were always my kids favrorites. Somehow her writing style always ended up with me singing the books to my kids in fund and silly ways. We also had the “The Biggest Pumpkin Ever”. Thank you for sharing these.
